Please click here to take a tour of the Coulter School
This project began from the remodeling of the Southern Huntingdon County School District High School. As we looked to the future, we realized that we should not forget the past. An idea began to bring a one room school to the SHCSD campus which could serve as a museum to the SHCSD. This could be a place where our students could experience life in a one room school. It could be a place where the community can plan events to enhance our appreciation of art, music, education, and history. This is what this museum must do.
A committee of faculty and staff members consulted with the district's administration to gain approval of the project. Our task was before us......it could become a reality if we worked to make it so! Mr. Stephen Hill of Chambersburg, PA gave the district the first boost to the project. He offered the Coulter School to the district at no charge. Fund raising began with enthusiasm to complete this project.
Volunteers began to work on this endeavor. The Coulter School building was dismantled and moved to the SHCSD campus where it currently resides today. The footer, foundation, and floor framework was installed before reconstruction could begin. The work began in October of 2004. Today, the Coulter School stands off of the parking lot near the high school in its final resting position. It welcomes guests, visitors, and students every single day. This building serves as a reminder of those things that came before us, and that will hopefully succeed long after we are gone.
